Nokia N900
« on: November 30, 2011, 05:25:20 pm »
I just ordered an N900 on amazon for $375 (new) it pretty sick.  It's not as sleek as the the iPhone, but it has:

-Hi Res Screen (800 x 480, ~267 ppi)
-EDGE
-3G
-Wifi b/g
-Bluetooth 2.1
-FM transmitter and radio (via a hack)
-Infrared Red (IR) Can act as a remote control
-Stylus
-Resistive touch screen (no multitouch)
-32 GB internal storage
-Micro SD card slot
-600 MHz arm processor (overclockable to ~1.1 GHz)
-5 Mega Pixel rear camera
-0.3 Megapixel forward facing camera
-True GPS
-Micro USB port
-TV out
-256 MB ram (768 swap)
-Runs Maemo 5 (a true linux OS)

and I think that covers it as far as the hardware specs.  As stated it does run true linux, so you know what that means, lots of hacks.

-Monitor Mode + Packet injection
-Can run Backtrack 5 ARM edition
-Can load android on it
-Can run win 95
-Can run windows app through WINE (Including old games)
-USB Host mode hack (reverse usb port to use devices, keyboards, mice, thumb drive, wireless cards, etc)
-Can Run OSX 10.3 (Painfully slow an unusable, but posible)
-Can run other linux distro (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, etc)
-Can Play DVDS
-Can Watch Live TV

And those are the big hacks, there are a ton more though.  And Cause those weren't enough here are the your tube videos.

Good for you.  You and A12 should get together some time and have a hate party, then you both can hate me at the same time.  :D

Also the timing on this is perfect.  It should arrive during the week of finals, so I'll have it ~5 Weeks to play with it before school starts again.

When you get it could you post a pretty video of it running backtrack?

I sure will. Funny thing is that youtube seems to be missing a vid of the 900 running backtrack.  I'll fill that void easily.  :D

Ohhh and I have a question. I just looked up one on eBay. And it said it had 3G support unlocked. So does that mean if I bought it from eBay I wouldn't have to pay for the 3G or what?

Since it is unlocked it's not tied to a carrier, meaning that you can us it with out an 2G/3G service if you want.  Later you can always add service by putting in a sim card.  One thing to note it that it doesn't support AT&T's 3G frequencies, so your with edge (2G) only.  If you want 3G you have to go with T-Mobile (in the US at less).  It can not be used with verizon  or sprint either since there networks use CDMA and not GSM like the rest of the world.

Is $375 a good price for a new one? Is that pretty much the going rate? What do used ones go for?

Lol, I know the feeling.  I was in the market for an iPhone, and then I discovered that I wasn't eligible (my mother was thought, which is what confused us all) so I was left with $350 that I was going to spend on a iPhone burning a hole in my pocket, and then boo tipped me off to this little gem on IRC the other day and..... :o

Boo's going to buy one soon too (I think).

375 is a really good deal for a new one.  They haven't been manufactured for ~2 years so they are getting hard to find.  Most new ones go from $400-$500, and used ones are in the $200-$300 range.
