So do you make it a habit to answering personal questions from random people in elevators?
Its called a story. Small talk. Chat with them. Say where you are from and then ask where they are from. Say your name and ask for theirs. Say how excited you are to see the local landmarks, parks, etc. You need to learn that to get info from people you just ask nicely.

It's called social engineering for a reason. Learn the art and get tge rewards, same as anything else. It's a skill and a useful one at that!

I actually have done something similar with a high succesion rate...

Don't go to front desk, learn the house keeping bed making times and wait in a close to your target door room.  When you see the housekeeping person tell the you got locked outside the room and leave them a tip.  They have a master key and most likely wont verify even your name on the computer ;)

I was just about to comment about basic hotel vaults as you  have explained most hotels by same brand type of safes usually there fairly cheap and if you know a fair bit of info on safes its not as hard as ud think to crack one like you stated default passwords certain codes.
