I think it's Voice over IP. I anticipate a humiliating correction.
EDIT: I got it right :)
"Voice over IP (VoIP) commonly refers to the communication protocols, technologies, methodologies, and transmission techniques involved in the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone."

I just ported the newest version of asterisk 1.8.x.x and only got one warning message.  I figured out how to setup SIP to make phone calls to other SIP clients on the same network.  But we want outgoing calls and their is a gtalk module for using google, which wasn't compiled in the version I uploaded to beta repo.  So almost their,  when I get a chance today I will upload the newest version.

Thats just one feature of asterisk.  I really dont know that much about it,  I hear it is awesome though.  If you were to use a SIP client from the AppStore it would cost money to connect and use its services, but here you can run your own VOiP server and connect to it through localhost.  Hell, you could even start your own telephone company theroretically.
