Lol, you should know there is no good "starting point" just dive in feet first and you'll just start learning.

I would recomend learning python or another language so you know how the code works.

^lol the classic iNinjas horseplay :D
My view is this. When starting you want to see results to get you as motivated as possible. So pick one of the automated tools just to feel a sense that it's real (not just mythical talk that the others only understand).
Once you experience some sort of success for yourself you'll have reassurance to keep at it. And perhaps see where you wanna focus your efforts in future.
So I'd say try out some tools like pirni, ipwn or (for me it was) ettercap. Even use a scanner to find a device with port 22 open and try ssh into it.
Then consider where you wanna go from there.
Enjoy and good luck

I agree with Lank. It's easier to stay enthusiastic when you get results from your efforts. Pirni & Derv, iPwN, PenTBox, Harvester & Medusa and NMap are all good tools to start with. NMap has a lot of options but if you look in the FAQ you will find a link to beginners NMap command guide. You can type in the commands to terminal short-cuts. Then add your IP or web site to the end of the command string you picked from the short-cut menu and boom done. The other tools should have manuals in our hack manual library.
