Have you ever rooted a box?

Almost:
Who here has ever gained root access to another computer? Preferrably without hard access? Where you on the same network? What did you do with it? Did you use SE?

I have to confess I never pulled it of. Most of the time my targets are weakly scripted sites, which reside on shared hostings which are (more or less) properly configured. So I can get access to the CMS, or database or admin panels, but never escalate to root. Every bigger site which has its own (virtual) server normally knows what they're doing and are somewhat dangerous to hack through public proxies ;).

StealthHacker:
I never have, but I really think I should sometime though :P I've done it to my sister's iPod, she was mad......

A12danrulz:
I rooted ~20 boxes at LAX airport by using arpspoofing to a webpage that asked them to download an executable that happened to be a backdoor. Simple is better :).It my school I did a couple priv escalation tricks to get SYSTEM. And then ms08_067_netapi has gotten me the odd shell or two, plus random other exploits that i forgot about by now

Cool! Sounds like I should try arpspoofing sometime after all :). How did you get that backdoor, or did you write it yourself? How fast did they figure it out (or do you still own them)?

A12danrulz:
They didnt figure it out, but I didnt write it to their filesystem, so as soon as they rebooted they were clean.
