The wifi on your iPod turns off a little bit after being put into lock mode. So it would not have progressed because it couldnt connect. Either leave the screen on the whole time, or get Insomnia from Cydia. It keeps the wifi enabled while your iPod is locked. Put it on a charger because Insomnia drains battery very fast.

Is a fix for that as simple as editing a file?

I couldn't get it to even crack simple dictionary word passwords on my own router, as a test of course. Maybe you will have diff luck.

Has your ipod connected to the router at anytime? If so 5dwifi won't work. It has to be a router you have never connected to.
