BT5 networking
« on: September 30, 2012, 01:01:56 am »
Im trying to configure BT5 to connect to the web via VMware. Spare the heckling I know why would I when BT5 can be used on a live cd.

So I configure the networking file ( etc/network/interfaces) setup a static ip. Back track was able ping the gateway successfully but not my host node win7. And I also get unknown host when pinging
Google.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated as always.

How do you have the networking configured for the VM? Is it NATed or are you using a wireless card interface?

You're trouble is that you haven't set up your routes properly.  My recommendation would be to utilize dhclient to pull a dhcp address, which will also set up the routes properly.  If you really want to use a static ip look into the route command.

Not really I'm just used to setting up win server with a static ip so I figured it would resolve any communication problems within the same subnet or ip range . I know that if I obtain network info with ipconfig on my host and then if/iwconfig on my client the up ranges are always different. But I know that's the NAT in VMware so I figure that I would put them in the same ip range. Ex( host 192.168.1.30, BT 192.168.112.1). But also if I iwconfig it doesn't recognize that I have built in wifi card. But when I ifconfig it recognizes the hardware and gives me an ip and such. That's because of VMware's virtual network right.
I'm going try what you suggested though.

Yes, backtrack will not see the wireless card since it is in a vm.  Also be sure that your connection in vmware is setup as bridged.

I dont know about VM but I have to issue the wicd command after I login to start my wireless card, then go to Menu > Internet > Wicd Network Manager to connect to AP.  Try that,  although BT5r3 starts wicd automatically (which I dont like, im gonna change it).
