These guys are really cool. I'm a member of their Minneapolis station. Basically, they take old computers and rebuild and give them to people that need them. http://www.freegeek.org/

pretty cool. I recycle old machines and pass them on to those who need them, but I never thought about organizing it. I wonder if they have plans to expand out east

I.T.'s don't do much "hardware maintenance" just so you know.

Actually a computer support tech would
be it removing and installing hardware or solving a clients issue. I see it in job postings all of the time. It ties into the job depending what responsibilities are added in the job role.

A computer support tech does. While someone like a server administrator or a network manager wouldn't do much of that sort of thing, and they are both considered to be in the "I.T." department. That's what I was talking about.

You are correct, and you just named my career goals. But I like to get my hands dirty too, I have a friend who does programming for a bank and knows nothing about formatting, installing HDD or network cards and such.

Yeah, I have a friend that works as an "I.T." but does server management, network administration, and a bit of hardware maintenance when something dies. Those positions don't come around very often though. Personally If I were you, I would call around to all the computer repair business' in my area and see if there were any openings.

I googled to see if there were any shops similar to free geeks. And guess what there isn't, light bulb = idea. There's plenty of pc,s and macs being sold for next to nothing, by people who just don't know how. And there's a lot of people in my community who could either use a well rebuilt pc/Mac that they could afford.
