Could I use Tor as a proxy?
« on: October 07, 2012, 05:39:31 am »
It's school tomorrow and I want to be able to bypass my school's firewalls. Would Tor be able to do that for me?

I'm pretty sure yes. TOR is only a really big network of proxies, so it should work. It was originally made for people in places like China where the government censored the web, so I'm pretty sure it can get around a school filter.

So how should/can Tor be configured to pass trough a proxy? Assuming I'm using the sid77 port of for/polipo, which file should I use to tell tor which port and which user/pass use to go though the school network and reach internet?

I have Tor working on the school computers and I want some advice on what to do with it. Should I keep it to myself and use it, or tell the admins about Tor so they can patch it up?

Ooh it's no fun if you tell the admin! XD Well really it's up to you. I use TOR and things like TOR at my school all the time, but only getting past the block filter to check Equestrian Daily, my little brony, etc.... But those are my personal needs. Just do what you think is right.

My advice would be don't tell them, you need some space in school to wiggle around in :)

That is to access Tor via the proxy tab on Settings.app/WiFi, what I meant is that I have a structure like this:

Device > Polipo (proxy for Tor) > WiFi to the local net (with proxy requirng authentication) > Internet

I'd like to know how to set Tor to use the wifi network accessing via a proxy, not how to connect to tor itself.

If your school blocks the TOR network then you will have problems like me, but you can use bridges to get around it, unless your school firewall blocks outbound ports

I tried using tor to bypass blocks but it doesn't work, it shows the wifi bars and it shows I'm on the wifi in settings but it won't load anything with tor, the speed test with tor is 0kb/s so I think they have tor blocked

You have a couple of options:
  • 1. Use a web proxy like hidemyass.com or runningfox.info.
  • 2. Add a proxy server in settings. My favorite proxy list is spys.ru.
  • 3. For mobile circumventing, use a VPN or proxy app, my favorite being OpenDoor, on the app store. It's free, and was created to bypass China's block filter!
