Netgear or linksys.

I have a Linksys E1200 after my terrible Netgear burnt out, and it's running like a champ.
If I assist you please consider giving me a +1.

Yeh, with linksys you have to stay on top of the firmware updates though otherwise its a good router

Firmware updates are VERY rare though. Maybe only once or twice a year.

"good but cheap" - not going to find one.
You can find a decent, workable router(not great), for cheap
Good routers are made by cisco, but are expensive. cisco bought linksys a few years back, and that is their "home" networking line. linksys should be fine, and are relatively cheap. As previously mentioned, stay on top of firmware updates(with any router, not just linksys)

I used to recommend netgear up until a few years ago, when their support did not want to take back a defective router at first. They claimed it was my ISP and told me to call them. I, knowing networks, had already done the testing. The connection was fine without router, the connection was fine with 2 other routers I had to try. It only failed with the netgear router. After I explained this to this idiot, and insisted he open an RMA to return this, he did. But, what if one of my clients called, they would not know networking or have done tests. They would have hung up with netgear and called their ISP incorrectly, only to hear from ISP that it is the netgear router. I could not have one of my clients go through that, or anyone else really, so I stopped buying or recommending netgear, and started telling people how horrible they are.

When something is defective or breaks, you want a company that stands behind their product. netgear is NOT that company

I wrote netgear corporate a letter about this incident. They were very apologetic, but nothing was ever done to correct the situation. I feel they train these out-sourced morons to "pass-the-buck" to anything but netgear, so they have less returns for their failed products.

I agree. I had a Netgear router before my linksys e1200 and I had so many problems with that thing. I called Netgear and they were absolutley no help whatsoever. Exactley as you say in your post. I will always buy Linksys now.

I'm with you all; Linksys is the best. Had this router for a good 5 or 6 years with absolutely no problems at all.

Thank you for the information. I think I will buy a linksys router.

My experience:
Before I had a linksys router, it was working quite well but one day stopped working at all. It was the router not my adsl. I have to say that it had about 3 years.

I use an older linksys router with DD-WRT firmware that allows for more network customization and range. This way you can find a cheap older router (like the linksys wrt54g) and load more powerful software onto it

That looks like a good one. Just remember to update the firmware first thing upon setup

We all just trashed Netgear, because their quality and reliability has gone way down, and now their support gives people trouble when they try to RMA defective products. They no longer stand behind their products

Use Cisco, or Cisco Small Business(Linksys)
