I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. But be patient and I'm sure one of the members will have a solution for you. Personally, if the computer is that old. I would install Ubuntu on it. Once it's running that is.
Ubuntu could work, but I've found unity to be pretty much ****, especially on older hardware. I'd look at trying something more light weight, like bodhi. It's based off ubu iirc, but uses e17/enlightenment as the desktop environment.

Well you don't have to use unity. You could use gnome or one of the other desktop styles to suit your purposes.

The most lightweight linux I know of is Wary Puppy Linux. You should try it out.

Okay, I have an idea. It would be good to know what exactly is causing the problem, but most adapters can be ruled out. Try taking the hard drive out and putting it in another computer with know-good hardware, or if you are a boss, an external adapter. A PSU is your power supply. That big thing with a bunch of wires coming out that you plug a 3 prong cord into from the back.

And for this Linux discussion... Windows XP all day everyday.

I'm far from an expert.

@ OP: Does the desktop have it's original RAM? And have you tried resetting the bios by removing little battery on motherboard (I'm tired and might be confusing matters - if so, I'm sorry). And is there an alternate serial cable to connect HD to? if there is, try connect HD via a diff cable.
Best ideas I could come up with lol

Put a recovery cd in your disk try shut everything off and remove your hard drive, turn it back on and if your bios is setup properly it'll boot into the disk then you can plug back in your hard drive and see what magic you can do.
