IP always showing up as 24...
« on: January 27, 2013, 10:01:57 pm »
Hey guys. Basically, I've been trying to figure out my IP for reverse connection in a metasploit payload, and whenever I google "What is my IP" it should bring up my IP, but instead it just brings up 24.<edit>. I've tried different sites, making sure no proxies were on, but nothing seems to fix it. Thanks!

Be careful about posting IPs, yours or anyone elses. I edited.

If you want to know the external IP that your router is holding, it is in the status part of router settings, or you can just go to a site like
http://www.ipchicken.com/

I know I shouldn't post IP's. It is the same IP for everyone on our network, so it must be some generic IP. And I tried IP chicken, same thing. I'll try the router.

Everyone on your network should have the same external IP. We pay our ISPs for one connection, one IP. It is the router that holds that one internet connected IP, and creates an internal network in order to share that resource with multiple machines. Routers create networks. The router holds the external 24. IP and also has an IP for its internal interface, probably something like 192.168.1.1. It is this interface that the machines in your house connect to. The router has a DHCP server to hand out IPs within that private range of 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254. Your machines/devices probably have 192.168.1.x IPs in ifconfig, ipconfig, but all show that same 24. ip on ipchicken.com. That is ok

You need to setup port forwarding on your router, or use a tool like that upnp port map administration that I posted the other day.
